TORONTO — Five things to watch for in the Canadian business world in the coming week:

Wholesale trade numbers

Statistics Canada will release wholesale trade data for May on Monday. The Canadian economy has been showing signs of picking up strength in recent months after a weak showing at the end of 2018 and the start of the year.

New railway record?

Canadian National Railway Co. releases second-quarter earnings results on Tuesday. The country's largest railway said it was on track to move record quantities of western Canadian grain after transporting more than 2.3 million tonnes of grain in June.

Rogers earnings

Rogers Communications Inc. will host a conference call to discuss its second-quarter results on Tuesday. The Toronto-based telecommunications and media company said it is confident its new device financing plans comply with federal codes after the regulator said it would submit questions to companies that had introduced such plans.

Suncor update

Suncor Energy Inc. will host a conference call to discuss second quarter results on Thursday. CEO Mark Little told an audience at an energy conference in Calgary recently that despite higher oil prices, the company is more focused on share buybacks than it is on increased spending.

George Weston's turnaround plan

George Weston Ltd. will hold a conference call to discuss its second-quarter results on Friday. Executives told shareholders in May that the company is starting to stabilize about a year into a multi-year transformation plan, and had won new business in its frozen division, mostly in doughnuts and pies.
