Fairfax India Holdings Corporation (TSX:FIH.U) announces net earnings of $149.0 million in the first quarter of 2017 ($1.05 net earnings per basic and diluted share) compared to net earnings of $0.7 million in the first quarter of 2016 ($0.01 net earnings per basic and diluted share), reflecting net unrealized gains on investments. Book value per share of $12.19 at March 31, 2017 increased from $10.25 at December 31, 2016.

Highlights in the first quarter of 2017 included the following:

  • The first quarter of 2017 included net unrealized gains on investments of $214.1 million, principally from increases in the market price of the company's two investments in public companies - IIFL ($160.1 million) and Fairchem ($54.5 million).

  • On March 24, 2017 the company completed the purchase of a 38% common share equity interest in Bangalore International Airport Limited ("BIAL") for total consideration of $385.5 million (25.2 billion Indian rupees). BIAL owns and operates the Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru under a 30+30 year concession agreement from the Government of India.

  • On March 31, 2017 the company repaid its $225.0 million secured credit facility.

  • At March 31, 2017 common shareholders' equity was $1,796.7 million, or $12.19 per share, compared to $1,075.4 million, or $10.25 per share, at December 31, 2016.

There were 141.8 million and 106.7 million weighted average shares outstanding during the first quarters of 2017 and 2016 respectively. At March 31, 2017 there were 117,434,531 subordinate voting shares and 30,000,000 multiple voting shares outstanding.
