NIAGARA FALLS, ON, May 27, 2017 /CNW/ - Marineland's marine mammal care team is mourning the passing of Sonja the Walrus. Sonja passed away suddenly late Thursday, May, 25, 2017, when the park was closed. Sonja was under veterinary care for symptoms of an unknown illness, but her death came as a surprise. Her death has impacted those who loved her most, dedicated members of her care team.

Sonja came to Marineland in 2004 and lived a life full of enrichment and along with Zeus, Smooshi, Apollo and Buttercup, Sonja left her mark on the millions of children and families who got to know her and learn about walruses through their interactions with her at Marineland. Sonja thrived in her home at Marineland.

Zeus, Smooshi, Apollo and Buttercup continue to be monitored by members of the marine mammal care team and our veterinarian and none of them appear to have concerning medical issues.

During a recent two-day OSPCA inspection no issues of concern were noted with any of the marine mammals in our care. Marineland's marine mammal care practices and record keeping were also validated by that inspection.

A detailed medical examination of her cause of death has been performed and results are expected within the next two weeks.

A full medical autopsy report regarding the circumstances of her death will be provided to the Animal Care Committee pursuant to the new strict Ontario Marine Mammal Care regulations.
