TheNewswire / April 28, 2017 - Calgary, AB - Students with a drive to serve the environment will be designing, building, and testing a variety of electronic and environmental contraptions, all while using recycled materials.  The Educational Partnership Foundation will be giving a $500 grant to Highwood School to help support the costs of the materials.

The grade 3 and 4 students at Highwood School will each be taking part in the program and creating their own items. The grade 3’s will be using recycled materials to create a small solar greenhouse, and the grade 4’s will be creating their very own solar ovens, solar iPad chargers, and mini windmills.

Through building solar ovens and iPad chargers, the students will use critical thinking skills to study solar energy, and be more aware of renewable energy related projects for school or home.  This eco project will help the students better understand environmental issues and raise awareness around protecting our Earth.  It will also enable the students to make connections to the real world and design and implement environmental projects, which will benefit our community and our world.  Eco-Leaders can equip the children with lifelong skills such as leadership, teamwork, critical thinking and creativity.

A goal of the activity is for the students to have an understanding of some the many public venues and activities in Calgary. This will encourage students to take their families and friends to the venues and use their growing English language skills to share what they have learned. Students will realize there are many interesting and safe places to go in Calgary.  “These students have found a way to help our environment, and make it relative to the lives that we live today.  It is such an honour for TEPF to support this project and help these students grow” explains Din Ladak, President & CEO of TEPF.

TEPF will be visiting Highwood School to present their grant at 8:50am on April 28, 2017.
