Calgary, Alberta / TheNewswire / December 5, 2016 — On a snowy December afternoon, The Educational Partnership Foundation (TEPF) and Calgary Flames visited a gymnasium packed full of excited students awaiting their hockey heroes at Monsignor J.S. Smith School to reward the school for their participation in Reading…Give it a Shot!  Harvey the Hound was joined by the voice of the Calgary Flames, Beesley, as well as players Deryk Engelland, Dougie Hamilton, and Freddie Hamilton.

Reading…Give It A Shot! is a program that encourages students in Kindergarten through Grade 6 to develop a love of reading, improve their reading skills and have some fun.  Flames players answered questions from students followed by autographs. This initiative is an excellent opportunity to emphasize the importance of literacy, complement existing reading programs in schools, and encourage parents to share in their children's reading. Last season, over 22,000 students participated in the Reading…Give It a Shot! program.

In attendance were school board trustees, TEPF representatives, and Reading… Give it a Shot! Sponsors Checker Courier, ConocoPhillips, and DATA Communications.  “Checker Courier, a division of The Checker Transportation Group, is pleased and honoured to be part of Reading…Give it a Shot since 2009. We are proud to encourage children to read, especially with the technological challenges in today’s world” Says Frank Formella of The Checker Transportation Group.  “As a national communications provider, DATA Communications Management understands the importance of youth literacy. We appreciate that those involved with TEPF are building both a strong voice and mind, and we look forward to continued partnership with TEPF” explains Mitch Cormier of DATA Communications Management.

ConocoPhillips representative, Barbara Simic spoke to the students and left them with a special message saying “We just want you to read, read, and read more.”
