After closing both Fillmore's in San Francisco and New York, legendary rock promoter Bill Graham brought the Rolling Stones to the Honolulu International Center (HIC) on January 21 and 22, 1973. Twenty years old, surfing at Kuhio Beach in the morning, and tennis in the afternoon, life was good. Securing tickets for both concerts was a bonus.

The back-up band was ZZ Top. No one I knew had a clue who they were. It turns out they were recording in Houston as far back as 1969. The lights dimmed, and drummer Frank Beard (clean shaven) started tapping lightly on a closed hi-hat cymbal.

Billy Gibbons strummed a low muffled open A chord "Canned Heat" and "John Lee Hooker" boogie style. With a thick Texas drawl in a low voice he mumbled something about a Texas town. Then the volume turned up to 11, and Dusty and Billy went full boogie, with Gibbons gravel voice yelling: "A HAW HAW HAW. A HAW HAW HAW."

The world was introduced to La Grange that night, which is ranked No. 74 on Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time.

Eleven years later, on February 3, 1984, ZZ Top played the Pacific Coliseum. From the 5:00 PM sound check to the drop off at the Hotel Vancouver at 9:00 AM, I put in a 16-hour shift with Dusty and Billy. Frank Beard was never to be seen.

Our first stop post-concert was Richards on Richards, where I introduced Dusty to the house DJ, Uncle Dirty. Uncle Dirty was friendly to all, and had hundreds of jokes and kept everyone laughing in his enclosed windowed booth.

Dusty and Billy were in no mood to stop partying at closing time, so the owner of Orestes Pacific Avenue, said we could all go there. I phoned a few friends and asked them to join us. My friend Doug used to fly when he was younger. Dusty was a pilot, and that conversation carried on for over an hour. Neil showed up from a famous Canadian Steak House and got along great with the affable Texans.

It was time to move the party back to the Hotel. The back seat was so crammed that two of the female fans had to lay sideways across Billy and Dusty's lap. They sang a Texas blues style two-part harmony happy birthday to one of the fans. What a sight that was, with their two long beards sticking up over the top of the sideways passengers.

A memorable night with two of the friendliest rock stars in America. I went home and slept until it was dark out.

RIP Muhammad Ali

On Sunday night, April 30, 1972, The Godfather was playing at the Coronet Theatre (Cineplex site today) on Granville Street, where I was a doorman. The movie at the Odeon Theatre -- a few doors to the south -- just ended, and couples were walking past me as I stood out front.

The chatter was that Muhammad Ali was at the Odeon, and was coming our way. He was wearing a suit and was with a man and a woman. What a stunning specimen he made as they slowly sauntered by. There was no eye contact, as I rubbernecked the trio halfway down the block.

In less than 24 hours at the Pacific Coliseum, he would fight George Chuvalo.

Dow 20,000 Gold 1,400 Oil 50 and Lithium

One down, two to go. With the lousy job numbers, and the Dow dropping only 31.5 points, I fully expect an all-time high within four weeks. It may take until the fall for gold to reach 1400.

The $45 jump in gold on Friday saw a few of the majors spike between 10% and 13%.

Golden Triangle favorite $CXO was up 37.5% for the week, while newcomer $ABN shot up an impressive 157% in 5 days. It may run some more.

Joe Lowry tweeted on Saturday that the Chinese lithium price has slowed briefly due to seasonality. Simon Moores anticipates another lithium supply squeeze between August and October.

A new wave of money managers will attend the over-subscribed London UBS lithium supply chain seminar on Monday. If it's anything like the Vegas show, there may be additional pressure on a few select juniors.

It's worth noting that nine months ago (pre Elon Musk $PE involvement), there were only a handful of lithium juniors. There are now over 140 in the game:
