For those who want to learn how to use basic features or just want to learn something new, here is a guide to some of the most commonly asked about features of this site.  It will be broken down into several sections instead of one long article to enable faster and easier navigation.   The site has three main panels or windows:

  • Channels - the discussion forums
  • Profile panel - both companies and users have Profile panels
  1. Guide to the company panel: https://ceo.ca/@DigitalMan/guide-to-the-ceoca-company-panel
  • right hand sidebar - site navigation and notifications

Channels are the core of CEO.ca as this is where conversations take place, and news, SEDAR, and SEDI reports are announced.

There are different types of channels:

  • Corporate channels - the discussion channels on primarily Canadian exchange listed stocks. Some US stocks are listed and have channels, but price/chart/stock metrics support is limited if available at all.
  • Public channels - Public channels are visible & open to all members
  • Panels - Panels are visible to all users, however only invited members are allowed to post
  • Private channels - Private channels are only visible to invited members

  • The #reference channel is a collection of links to regulatory and industry policies and databases

Panels / User Interface

Corporate channels are the core of CEO.ca.

Viewed on mobile devices, you are likely to see the company information as a tab on the left:

The yellow circle at the top right in the above screen capture indicates the toggle for the right hand sidebar.  Clicking it will hide or show the sidebar.

To its left is the search button.  Clicking it will allow a search of companies, channels or users.

On wider screens your screen will be split into one side for the company metrics and one side for the conversation channel:

On the left side panel you will find the chart and basic information such as float, volume, etc.

Clicking anywhere on the company title bar including the circle on the right with a + inside it will expand the company tab while hiding the conversation channel.  Clicking again anywhere on the company title bar or the circle on the far right with the X will shrink the company panel and restore the chat panel.

Posting in Channels:

Anything you post in a public channel whether $corporate, @user or #idea/#topic will also appear in your own channel.  For a good article on how the site connects $tickers, @users and #ideas/#topics, see this article How to Use CEO.ca and the related article How I use CEO.ca by @newton

A tag is a reference to a company $ticker, person @user or #topic or #idea.  If you use any tags in your post, the post will also appear in those channels, ticker forums or user profiles.  Using a tag for a channel that does not exist, will create that channel.  i.e. if #newbies did not exist, it would be created as a public channel by your use of the tag #newbies in a post.

Using multiple $ticker tags is generally not kosher and is considered spamming unless you have a good reason to do so that will be of interest to all readers of all companies/topics/users you are tagging.

Colored dots appear next to each username when posting.  These colors are assigned upon each login per device and are to distinguish between users in the flow of conversation.  They cannot be selected or customized by the user.

Tagging a User

To reply to a comment and notify the poster, include @handle in your post.  After typing the @ the site will autofill with handles of recent posters so you don't have to type the whole thing.  If the handle you want to tag appears, press tab to accept it and then spacebar.  This often helps get the spelling right for those long or sometimes bizarre spellings.

If you make a mistake typing and want to start over, press SHIFT-HOME followed by Delete or Backspace and start with the @ sign again or just backspace it all and start with the @ sign again.

Be sure there is a space before and after the handle or the site will not pick it up as a tag.  Putting a handle in square brackets [@handle] or after ...@handle will not register as a tag.  A post that tags a user will also show up on their channel.  Should you wish to edit or delete that post, it must be done in the channel it was originally posted in to take effect.

Editing / Deleting a Post

You can edit or delete a post within 15 minutes of posting by clicking or tapping on the post to reveal the tools below.

Click or tap on the pencil icon to edit or on the garbage can to delete.  You must edit/delete in the channel you originally posted in for the changes to take effect in tagged locations.

Liking a post

To like a post, mouseover or tap to the left of the colored dot beside a user handle and a thumbs up hand will appear if there is not one there already.  Click or tap to add to the thumbs up count.  Clicking or tapping again will reduce the count if you change your mind or did it by mistake.

Posts that receive 4 or more thumbs up will appear in the popular channel which is accessed in the right hand sidebar:

Clearing Watchlist Notifications

Watchlist notifications can be cleared either by the feed button or the clear all at the top of the Notifications list

Bookmarks

You may want to save a post for future reference. Bookmarking can also be handy if you want to continue reading a channel where you left off at another time. The site will often track where you left off, but to be sure, use a bookmark.

To access this post in the future, click on the bookmarks button on the right sidebar.

DM - Direct Messages

Direct messages are equivalent to private messages, private conversations with other users. Tags in DMs will not appear in $company, #topic or @user channels.

You can send a direct message to yourself to keep notes. To do so, click on the colored dot next to your username/handle and select Send a Direct Message. This message can later be found under the Direct Messages section on the right sidebar. It will be labeled "with @your_handle"

Following a User

To follow a user, click on their username to go to their channel, then click +Subscribe in the top right of the chat window (on mobile devices there may just be a + symbol). This will open the subscribe window and they can be added to a watchlist. If you want to create a new watchlist category, see this article: Creating Watchlist Categories on CEO.ca

It is possible to add a subscription to Uncategorized and then move it to another category afterwards, so you don't have to exit this screen and have to come back to it.

A list of the most followed users on the site can be found here: https://ceo.ca/?tab=community&sub_tab=users

Unfollowing a User

To unfollow a user, follow the same process, and then click on Remove

Block / Ignore other Users

You may find some users add no valuable content or are socially disruptive. You can either ignore or block such users.

When you Ignore someone, you will not see their messages.

When you Block someone, you will not see their messages, and they will not see yours.

Block and Ignore functions are accessed via a message or user profile. They are in the Moderate section in the tools that appear below a message (click or tap on the message to reveal the tools) or by clicking on a user's handle to view their profile (tap the Profile tab on mobile after tapping on their handle to see their channel)

Removing a Block or Ignore:

On the right hand sidebar, scroll down to Account Settings and click.

The dialog box will open and you will see an Ignores & Blocks section. Find the user and click/tap on the remove link.
