OAKLAND, Calif., Dec. 23, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The "Ghost Ship's" first fire death lawsuit filing will be Friday, December 23, with a news conference at 2:30 PM. 36 died in the blaze.
This first "Ghost Ship" Oakland warehouse fire death filing will be Friday, December 23, by Mary Alexander, San Francisco attorney, former National President of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, now called the Association for American Justice. Alexander represents the parents of a twenty year-old "smart, beautiful" woman who died, Alexander said.
THE NEWS CONFERENCE WILL FOLLOW THE FILING, AND ALEXANDER WILL BE JOINED BY THE VICTIMS' PARENTS. The news conference will be Friday December 23, 2:30 PM on the steps of the Alameda County Courthouse 661 Washington Street Oakland 94607 (note this building address, not other nearby).
Alexander said that in the Ghost Ship Fire, which occurred December 2, 36 perished and others were injured, and it is the deadliest fire in California since the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The warehouse had been turned into a living complex, and a music event was under way when the fire occurred after 11PM. Residential and entertainment uses were not allowed under the building's zoning. Numerous complaints had been made concerning the building and prior events. "The building didn't meet safety standards," said Alexander.
(Embargoed until filing): The complaint being filed by Alexander for the victim's family (David and Kimberly Gregory) alleges, among other factors:
- The victim was "unable to exit."
- The facility "lacked adequate and sufficient safety measures" and was "not up to fire protection and safety codes."
- There was a "willful and conscious disregard for safety."
- "The premises were in a dangerous and unsafe condition."
Full details will be provided at the news conference.
